Math Workshop
Drew led our temperature and calendar routines, and we didn't need a
wind chill chart. We have continued on subtraction strategies, with
adding up. The students performed “Don't forget Zero” for Beth and
Katie's classes. The students played some time-telling games to
reinforce telling time to five minutes. On Thursday, we read and did
mathematical explorations of When the Relatives Came.
Book Clubs
This is what our groups worked on this week:
Stars: Winter Poems; sight words
Stripes: Father Bear Comes Home; long i/long a
Washingtons: Gingerbread Boy; long i/long a
Lincolns: Merry Christmas, Amelia Bedelia; phonic games
Eagles: Monster Blood III; phonic games
Science/Theme
With Autumn, the students looked at the animals of the Rockies. They
did a chart of the things they have learned about mountains with
Gretchen. On Wednesday, we watched Homeward Bound to see the animals
of our Western mountains. The kids really enjoyed this, and it was
fun for Autumn and me to see this classic through their eyes.
Stories
We continued to enjoy The Secret of the Andes. We also heard The
Magic Dreidel, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Twelve Days
of Christmas.
Special and Noteworthy
We enjoyed Las Posadas on Monday morning. Staff, parents, and Middle
School students worked together to provide this experience for the
elementary and early learner students. Please be sure to thank Elena
and Clara for this wonderful event.
Also, our Bolivian friend, Chicho, left this week to return home.
Adios!
Holiday Gifts
Please remember to be discreet if classroom friends are exchanging
gifts. Other students can feel very badly about this. Many families
donate gifts to the classroom. We have a number of students (and a
teacher) with hypersensitive skin, and gifts of Dove liquid soap or
Aveeno lotion are appreciated. Multiple paperback copies of any Dick
and Jane title are fun reading for book groups, and a set of Bob
books would be appreciated for our early readers. Gift cards for
Barnes & Noble and Books A Million can also be useful for adding to
the classroom collection. If you wish to give a personal gift to
Autumn or me, please know that we appreciate these gestures. Kroger
gift cards purchased from the school help CS, and I appreciate the
help with feeding my voracious teenager. The greatest gift you give
us is your
children. Thank you! Happy holidays! |
