Math Workshop
We continued our temperature and calendar routines, with Kim leading
these activities as our “beautiful assistant.” We reviewed the value
of coins and bills this week. We played “Timing It Right” to
practice elapsed time. We continue our weekly timed practice for
addition, and we saw improvement in everyone's speed and accuracy
over the last few weeks. Please practice their math facts to 20 for
speed with your child each day.
Book Clubs
This is what our groups worked on this week:
N-E-Ds: Dick and Jane and sk/sm/st/sp.
Stars: Tongue twisters and sh/ch.
Stripes: Frog and Toad Together and -oa.
Washingtons: How the Camel Got His Hump and -oa.
Lincolns and Bald Eagles: The Honey Pot and long -a patterns (there
are six—do you know them?).
Science/Theme
We designed Oriental carpet patterns and drew dessert animals.
Stories
The class enjoyed hearing So You Want to be President? Some of the
students liked the idea of being president, but others preferred a
more private life. Some wished to clean up the environment, others
wanted more effective punishment for criminals. Sophie hoped to end
wars, and Elena wanted to see that everyone gets enough to eat.
Special and Noteworthy
We still need drivers for a field trip to the
Natural Foods Co-op to learn about the products of the old
Silk Road through the Sahara desert to China, such as spices,
coffee, and tea. We will need to leave here around 9 AM on Tuesday,
February 12, and anticipate leaving the Co-op by 10:30. Please send
me a note if you can drive your child and other students, and remember
we will need booster seats for students under 8 years old. |
