Notes from the Director (Holly)

It is with sadness that we say goodbye to our eight beautiful Bolivian exchange students. It has been a laughter-filled and exciting learning experience for all of our students, host families, and staff members.
As a host family, you learn a lot about the Bolivian culture and reacquaint yourself with your own country and family. It is a joy to share our homes with such delightful young men and women. Special thanks to this year’s host families: the Musgrave/Stephensons, Cohens, Nolen/Campbells, Largen/Pattersons, Carrells, Bentleys, Bostons, Walshes, and Kilgores. Thank you to Michi for helping with field trips and travel arrangements.

The Bolivian exchange program is in its tenth year. It would not be possible without all of the hard work, dedication, patience, and sense of humor that our beloved Elena exudes each day. We appreciate all that you do, Elena!

To our Bolivian students: We are glad that you became a part of our community. We will miss you, and our students who are traveling to Bolivia look forward to seeing you again soon!
Hugs to Rolando, Chicho, Jose, Mauricio, Natalia, Antonio, Bruno, and Alejandro.

C.S. International Festival

December 17-20

Active Learning in Progress

The Early Learner and elementary classes will be sharing in an International Festival on the mornings of December 17, 18, 19 and 20. On Monday, Autumn and C.S. parent Guiliana C. will host an Italian activity, and Gretchen and C.S. parent Martina R. will host an Austrian game. On Tuesday, Elena will welcome students for an activity about Latin America. Betsy’s and Kim’s classes will host activities from Afghanistan on Wednesday. Lucia will conclude the festival with a craft, food, and costumes from India (under the direction of C.S. parent Meeta M.) and, later in the day, Brazilian music from C.S. parent Michelle R. Please let Gretchen or Lucia know if you have decorations or photos to share for the festivities. More international activities will be held in 2008. The International Festival is an outgrowth of the Diversity Circle of Community School.

Send a Musical Greeting to Someone at C.S.

Middle School Choir raises money for field trip.

The Middle School Choir is selling holiday songs! For $1.00 each, you can buy a musical greeting for a Community School person and the choir will sing them the song. See the attached page or visit the music page on the school website for the form. Songs include Deck the Halls, Feliz Navidad, Jingle Bells, Let It Snow, The Dreidel Song and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Deadline: Wednesday, December 19. The money raised will go toward the Kings Dominion trip in the spring. If you have questions, contact Kim M.

Safety Alerts!

1)     Our driveway and parking lot can become quite congested during the school day. Please refrain from cell phone use while dropping off or picking up your child. We have had some near accidents because of cell phone use. We need everyone’s attention on safe driving.

2)     For your child’s safety, please remember to keep the office promptly informed of any changes in your work, home, or cell phone numbers. We have had several recent cases of sick children whose parents were inaccessible due to disconnected cell phones and outdated work numbers.

Head Lice

on Campus

We have had another case of head lice reported on campus recently.  Please check your child’s head for lice. If you need information on lice control, please stop by the office or contact your child’s pediatrician.

Needed: Family Email Addresses

Email addresses to be used for school contact purposes only.

We would like to have a current list of email addresses for our families.

Addresses will not be shared in any way with other organizations. If you would, please send a quick message: just type "family email" in the subject line and be sure there is at least a signature in the body of the message, so we can create a contact list. Send the email to:

 Thank you!

Reminder

Shop Amazon.com via the C.S. web page and C.S. will get cash back for classroom and lab technology purchases.

Purchase a Brick for the C.S. Walkway at Holiday Prices!

We are currently promoting a special window of holiday discount on engraved bricks for our walkway. Please consider purchasing a brick in honor of a loved one, to commemorate a special event, or even to share advice with our students. A single brick with three lines of text is $80; a double-sized brick with 6 lines of text is $160. Proceeds benefit the building fund.

Support Our Middle School Students’ Efforts to Make the C.S. Campus a True Environmental Classroom

1)     Please consider buying a living Christmas tree this year, with the root ball intact. After the holidays, donate the tree to C.S. The students will plant the tree between our campus and the Hollins apartments to create a living, oxygen-producing, evergreen screen. Bring your live tree to the C.S. parking lot on January 11 between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon or between 1:00 and

      2:45 p.m.

2)     Purchase student-made Community School house ornaments for your holiday tree or as gifts for family and friends. The students will individualize each ornament with the name(s) of your choice. Each ornament is $5. Purchase your ornaments during morning drop off (8:15-8:45 a.m.), after school (3:15-6:00 p.m.), or download the order form on our website and send it to the office.

Attention:

After School Parents

You must come into the building to sign out your children.

Please note that you must park your car and come into the building to pick up and sign out your child from the After School Program. Our after school staff cannot leave other children unattended in order to walk your child out to the car, and we cannot safely allow your child to walk out in the dark alone. We take your child’s safety very seriously, and we want to be sure that each child is handed off directly to his or her parents or to the person designated by the parents to pick up that child on that day. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Please Check

Lost & Found

Our Lost & Found box is overflowing! Please remember to check for your child’s missing clothing, backpack, lunchbox, etc. The box is located outside, to the right of the office door. All items not claimed before the Winter Holidays will be donated to a local charity.

Weather-Related School Closing & Delay Information

If there is any chance of a weather-related school closing or delayed opening, please check one or more of the following: WSLS-TV 10 and WDBJ-7 or WVTF (89.1), Q-99 FM and K-92FM radio stations. Best bet for accurate, timely information: call Community School (563-5036) after 6:00 a.m. on the morning of a potential closing and listen to the voice mail message or check the C.S. web page. Please recheck the listings throughout the morning as our opening status occasionally changes as weather conditions change. On days of a delayed 10:00 a.m. opening: classes start at 10:00 a.m., and there is no Before School Care. You may drop off your children beginning at 9:45 a.m. If weather requires an early school dismissal, we will post it on our web page and on the TV and radio stations listed above. Please note: C.S. does not follow the other systems; we make our own decisions regarding weather closings and delays.
