Notes from
the School Administrator (Michi)
A time-honored tradition is fast
approaching, and it involves food and art. Our annual
Thanksgiving Luncheon and Student Art Show is next Wednesday,
November 21. I invite all members of our community -- students,
parents, staff, alumni and friends -- to join us for this
memorable event. Close to three hundred people attend, and we
have an art gallery filled with incredible student work. The
finishing touches are being made in art classes now, and Cherry
is working feverishly to have pieces ready. The art show will be
on display in the Ballator Gallery (second floor in the Moody
Center) from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Thanksgiving luncheon,
held in the Moody Center dining hall, will begin at noon and
last until 1:00 p.m. The Moody Center is on the campus of
Hollins University.
This is a potluck luncheon. We ask that Seminar families and
C.S. staff bring dessert and that all other C.S. families bring
an entrée for ten to twelve people plus a side dish. This is
always a very hungry crowd. Volunteers are needed to help set
up, take down, and transport leftover food to Roanoke area
shelters. Call the office if you can help.
Good food, good fellowship, and art…what better way to start the
Thanksgiving holiday?

17 & 18)
Encourage
all of your family members, friends, and acquaintances to shop
on our dates and to use our vouchers.
Download
additional
book fair
vouchers on our website or pick them up in the school office.
|
Come to the book fair this weekend! Encourage all of
your family members, friends, and acquaintances to shop on our
dates and to use our vouchers.
All purchases with
C.S. vouchers will be credited toward our total.
Additional vouchers are available in the school office, at pick
up Thursday and Friday, and in the store all three days.
Parents: Your children
may be participating in some of the special events scheduled
during our book fair. Please refer to last week’s flyer or the
website for a listing of special events and contact your child’s
teacher if you have questions. All events will take place at
Barnes & Noble (Valley View).
Need extra book fair
vouchers? Download them at http://www.communityschool.net/downloadable_documents.htm.
Class wish lists will be available at the C.S. information table
in Barnes & Noble during the book fair. As the holiday season
approaches, our parents often want to give their child’s teacher
a gift. The teachers greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness, but
ask respectfully that if families are so inclined, they please
buy something for the classroom. Books are something teachers
and children always enjoy, and the book fair is the perfect
opportunity for some early holiday book buying for the
classroom.
Holiday gifts, birthday gifts, anniversary gifts, indulging
yourself, etc. – C.S. will get up to 20% of the value of
everything you buy during the dates of our book fair. You can
even use B & N gift cards and/or your
B & N
Reader’s Advantage discount card when making purchases. Keep in
mind that Barnes and Noble carries more than just books: CDs,
DVDs, stationery, magazines, greeting cards, games, toys,
puzzles, mugs, diaries, bulk coffee and tea, and on and
on. Please note that you can order books now that may not be in
stock, and, as long as you pick them up – using a voucher –
during the dates of our bookfair, C.S. will get credit for your
purchase.

Attention All MS Choir Members and Their Parents
|
The choir is singing at the
C.S. Book Fair at the Valley View Barnes & Noble this Saturday
at 10:00 a.m. A note will be emailed or sent home on Thursday
regarding details. I have received email addresses from a few
parents and would like to build an email list to send out choir
info; this will ensure that you receive information on choir
events and will save paper. Just send an email to
with your child's name in the subject area. Many thanks! Kim M,
music teacher

History Kids
Service Project

|
Last week the History Kids
(Kim’s and Betsy’s upper elementary classes) held a bake sale
that raised funds to purchase hats and mittens for children in
Afghanistan. The students raised $93.98. The low for this week
in Afghanistan will be 26 degrees, and it will soon be getting
much colder. According to kiva.org, 70% of Afghans live on less
than $2 a day. The average income is $300 a year. The History
Kids will be learning more about Afghanistan as the year goes on
from people who served there, and from some who still do. We
will also be hosting activities for the school that share our
knowledge of Afghanistan during International Festival on
December 20. The students baked the cookies and brownies for the
bake sale themselves. The class also baked as part of a social
studies unit learning about the importance of “The Three
Sisters” in Native American culture here in Virginia.

Food Donation Drive
Reminder
Please place your food
donations in the containers beside the school office. |
The Community School Board
of Trustees is conducting a Food Drive to benefit area food
banks and shelters. Non-perishable food items and paper products
will be collected from now until Thanksgiving. Containers will
be available next to the office for easy drop-off. Items most
needed are canned soups, vegetables, fruits, tomato sauces as
well as dried pasta and paper towels and toilet paper. Larger
canned goods are preferred, but all donations will be
appreciated. Our goal is to collect 500 or more items. Please
consider supporting this project!
|
Please Check

|
Our Lost & Found box is
overflowing! Please remember to check for your child’s missing
clothing, backpack, lunchbox, etc. The box is located outside,
to the right of the office door. All items not claimed before
the Winter Holidays will be donated to a local charity.
