There are only 11 more days until our 28th Annual Strawberry Festival. Thank
you to everyone who signed up at conference last week. If you didn't, or if you
needed to get back to us, please use the attached form and sign up today to work
Berry Cleaning and Festival Days! Also, please help us with the following:
- Sell the five (5) advance sale tickets and send in the money to the
office. Need extra tickets? Come to the office.
- Promote our Large Order program. Orders of 15 or more are delivered to
most areas.
Strawberry Festival is a tremendous undertaking, but what a wonderful community
event for the Roanoke Valley.
There will be an additional extended P.O.P meeting on Wednesday, April 23, from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., so the students can participate in mediation training with Susan Chapman. If there are any questions, please speak with Pattie S.
Congratulations to all the students in Linda’s math classes on their first
and second place wins in the middle school division of the Radford Region 2008
Stock Market Game. They will be recognized at an awards reception at Radford
University on May 15.
Please mark your calendars for Arbor Day on April 25. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our middle school students in the Garden Design and Land Use Management Friday Group, Community School will be hosting Arbor Day for all of Roanoke County. The students have planned all parts of our festivities. Please join us in the sports field from 10:30 a.m. to noon, rain or shine.
Thank you to Lorena D’Andrea for a fabulous presentation on Argentina. Lorena is currently at Hollins University on a Fulbright Fellowship. We are very thankful that she took time out of her extremely busy schedule to talk to our Spanish Classes about her native country.
With the middle school production of "Tom Sawyer" for Arts Festival coming up, we need your help with props for the play. At this time, we are looking for lanterns, fake tombstones (maybe you have some in storage with your Halloween decorations), and wicker picnic baskets. The story takes place in the 1870's, so the more vintage in appearance, the better. Be sure to attach your name somehow, so we can return the loaned items to the proper family. Thank you so much! Kim M and Lisa
Congratulations to C.S. middle school teacher Jennifer for her first place award in the 2008 poetry competition sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Branch of The National League of American Pen Women. Jennifer’s poem A Geometer Built the World will be posted on roanokepenwomen.blogspot.com by June 1.
Elena is looking for Matchbox-sized vehicles (cars, trucks, planes, trains, etc.) for use in her Spanish classes. The younger students are studying transportation-related vocabulary and have laid out an entire city on the floor of the classroom.
Elena is hosting Spanish Lunches in her classroom every Monday. Bring your lunch and join her for Spanish conversation practice. Students and parents welcome.
Summer is just around the corner, so don't miss out on the opportunity to sign up your child for our C.S. summer camps. We still have a few openings in all of our fabulous camps. You can grab a camp flyer in the office or download it from the bottom of this page. If you have any questions regarding camp, please feel free to contact Lucia at (540) 563-5036 or email at luciak@communityschool.net. Thank you!
On May 9 and May 16, the costuming Friday group in the middle school will be making quarter-scale costumes from patterns designed by the students. Our Friday group meets from 10:00 a.m. to noon in Katrina’s classroom. If you have a sewing machine, time, and a sense of humor, we could use the help of four great people. Please call Anna Beebe if you are interested.
We need people to sign up to drive for large order deliveries on Friday, May 2. We cannot pay for gas, but we do know it is very expensive. To thank you for your time and to help offset the cost of gas, for each hour of your driving shift, we will count it as two hours of volunteer time. (If you drive four hours, we will count it as eight hours of Strawberry Festival volunteer time.) Thank you for all you do toward making Strawberry Festival a success.
