Beyond “The Good Deed”
One of the many reasons that my husband and I chose Community School for our children’s education was the school’s emphasis on service to others. At Community School, service has never been considered an extra-curricular or elective part of a student’s education; it has always been integrated into the everyday curriculum. Service learning not only improves a child’s character, it enhances a child’s academic learning and social development. When children work together on a project to serve others, they are allowed an opportunity to apply their reading, writing, math, social studies, and science skills to real world experiences. In researching a service project idea, students read magazines, newspapers, Internet articles, and brochures. They listen to and watch the local and world news reports. During many projects, students will write letters, make lists, interview people, create posters, and design marketing tools. Mathematics applications include the creation of schedules, calendars, running totals, surveys, graphs and more. Whether the project is for children on the other side of the globe or animals in our local region, students are exposed to other cultures, ecological and biological needs, and civic responsibility. When children pull together to serve others, they also strengthen their group problem-solving skills. They learn to negotiate and compromise, communicate verbally and in writing, and respect others with differing opinions. Integrated learning experiences, responsibility, initiative, empathy, compassion, and leadership: service to others is one of the cornerstones of a Community School education.
The final early learner and elementary drama performances will take place tomorrow, March 12, at the following times: Ruth Ann/Katlyn’s class 9:30 – 10:00, Lucia’s class 10:30 – 11:00, Kim’s class 1:30 – 2:15, Betsy’s class 2:15 – 3:00. Parents are invited to attend.
During the week of March 17-20, the Before School Program will be held in Kim Halsey's classroom, room 102 in the new building.
Parents: Please return the bottom half of the FYI as soon as possible and complete a medication form if your child will require any medication administered during the trip. The final trip payment is due March 14. Thank you!
The younger middle school students are studying the Constitution and Bill of Rights. We would love to have a speaker come and talk about individual rights and/or the court system. If you work with the police or court system, we would love to have you come and speak. The best time to speak to all three classes at one time is any Friday morning between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m.

It is with regret that we inform the community that we have recently had several thefts on campus. Items stolen include money, a digital camera, a camcorder, an LCD projector, a USB microphone, and a laptop computer. Because of this, please be reminded that you should not send anything valuable to school with your child. Also, please notify Holly or Michi if you have any information about the thefts or notice anything suspicious while you are on campus. Thank you.
It’s that time again! Our classes are beginning to work on their art, drama and music pieces for the Arts Festival on Friday, May 23. It is important that students be here as much as possible from now through the festival. Please let the classroom and arts teachers know now if your child will not be here on May 23 or the week of May 23, as these absences will be crucial to the last rehearsals. We also ask that you let classroom and arts teachers know as soon as possible if your child has any planned, extended absences from now through the Arts Festival. Thank you so much for your cooperation. Cherry, Kim, Lisa, and Julie
1) To everyone who purchased school ornaments in December: Thank you for your support of our middle school Garden Friday Group. If you purchased your ornament with a check, please contact Anna Beebe.
2) A big thank you to the following parents who supplied the wonderful breakfast treats for our faculty and staff: Annette N., Norma B., Jennifer H., and Stephanie S.
The Strawberry Festival Community Chest needs your talent and your donations. What is Community Chest? It was named by the students and is one of the many fundraising facets of Strawberry Festival. It’s a booth that showcases strawberry-themed goods made or donated by parents, grandparents, students and friends. Each year we receive wonderful sewn and crafted items. Each year is slightly different, but we do have some specific items that are perennially popular, such as our t-shirts and homemade strawberry jam (a huge seller). We rely upon your help to replenish the stock. If you would like to have the recipe for the jam, ideas for sewn items, or if you have any other ideas for the booth, please call Mary at 389-4566. The Community Chest makes a nice profit for the school and has a faithful following in the festival-goers! We will have a box in the office waiting to receive your goodies. Thanks for your help as we prepare for our most successful Strawberry Festival yet! Sue Deegan (shdeegan@comcast.net) & Mary Boston (bostonfour@verizon.net)
