Elementary & Middle School Information Session - Thursday, April 10, at 7:00 p.m.

Do you ever wonder how the curriculum and expectations change as students move from one class to another or from elementary to middle school? What kind of homework will your child be assigned in the upper elementary classes? How do the middle school teachers deal with the increasing peer pressure of the “tween” and early teen years?   Join us at our Elementary and Middle School Information Session on April 10 for the answers to these and many other questions. Current and prospective parents are invited to attend. If you need free childcare during the session, please call the office in advance to reserve a space. Current parents please note that this is a general information session intended to provide details on our program as it progresses through the elementary and middle school years. If you wish to discuss your child in particular, we encourage you to set up a meeting with the teachers and/or Holly.

During the program, parents will visit our elementary and middle school classrooms. The teachers will lead brief discussions on the curriculum, educational philosophy, homework, peer pressure, and daily class schedules. The teachers will also discuss the features that make Community School’s program unique in the Roanoke Valley: hands-on learning, arts integration, Spanish studies, student responsibility and goal setting, off-campus learning, and middle school electives. Following the classroom visits, parents are invited to enjoy refreshments and discuss their questions with Community School’s Director and Admissions Coordinator.

We encourage all our current families to invite a prospective family to attend this information session. Cards and flyers with information about this event are available in the office. Don’t forget to complete a Parent Referral Card for your guest family – if they enroll, you can receive a $250 credit on your fall tuition. The referral cards are available in the office and online at www.communityschool.net (click on “Links,” connect to our old website, then click on “Downloadable Documents”). If you have any questions about the information session or the admissions process, please call Victoria in the office.

Re-enrollment for 2008-09 - Deadline April 2

Re-enrollment forms were mailed to current families last week. If you have not received your re-enrollment information, please call the school office.  Re-enrollment forms and tuition deposits are due in the office by April 2. After that date, we cannot guarantee that a space will be available for your child in the fall. If you have any questions about re-enrollment, please call Victoria.

Special Concert at Hollins University

The Fisk Jubilee Singers will give a free concert at duPont Chapel (Hollins University) on Saturday, March 29, at 7:30 p.m. These singers are a group of sixteen young men and women from Fisk University in Nashville. The original Jubilee Singers introduced "slave songs" to the world in 1871 and played a central role in the preservation of the unique American musical tradition known today as Negro Spirituals. This tradition continues with this present-day group. This concert is a great complement to our theme of the American Quilt. Our upper elementary classes have spent some music class time studying spirituals. I encourage you to take your child to this concert. Kim M, music teacher

Tuition Assistance

The Financial Aid Committee will mail 2008-2009 tuition assistance grant letters to parents over Spring Break. If you have questions about tuition assistance, please contact Michi.

Change in Before School Location

During the week of March 17-20, the Before School Program will be held in Kim Halsey's classroom, room 102 in the new building.

Alumni Update

Congratulations to Max B. on his recent acceptance to the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg. Max, who received the prestigious Fentel Scholarship, is currently a senior at Roanoke College majoring in biology. He also works in the Lewis Gale Emergency Room and as an EMT with Life Net, volunteers with the Salem Rescue Squad, has his Wilderness EMT certification and Cardiac Tech certification, and received a Red Cross Local Hero Award in 2005. Max attended Community School from preschool through middle school (Seminar class of 1999). His mother Betsy teaches upper elementary students at C.S.

Needed for Class:  Someone to Speak on Individual Rights and/or the Court System

The younger middle school students are studying the Constitution and Bill of Rights. We would love to have a speaker come and talk about individual rights and/or the court system. If you work with the police or court system, we would love to have you come and speak. The best time to speak to all three classes at one time is any Friday morning between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m.

Congratulations

Congratulations to C.S. middle school teacher Katrina Hill and her husband Jason on the birth of their son Ethan Wilhelm Hill on March 4. Katrina and Ethan are both healthy and happy.

Recent Thefts on Campus

It is with regret that we inform the community that we have recently had several thefts on campus. Items stolen include money, a digital camera, a camcorder, an LCD projector, a USB microphone, and a laptop computer. Because of this, please be reminded that you should not send anything valuable to school with your child. Also, please notify Holly or Michi if you have any information about the thefts or notice anything suspicious while you are on campus. Thank you.

Arts Festival Preparations Underway - Student attendance is very important in the period leading up to the festival on May 23.

It’s that time again! Our classes are beginning to work on their art, drama and music pieces for the Arts Festival on Friday, May 23. It is important that students be here as much as possible from now through the festival. Please let the classroom and arts teachers know now if your child will not be here on May 23 or the week of May 23, as these absences will be crucial to the last rehearsals. We also ask that you let classroom and arts teachers know as soon as possible if your child has any planned, extended absences from now through the Arts Festival. Thank you so much for your cooperation.         Cherry, Kim, Lisa, and Julie

Strawberry Festival Community Chest

The Strawberry Festival Community Chest needs your talent and your donations. What is Community Chest? It was named by the students and is one of the many fundraising facets of Strawberry Festival. It’s a booth that showcases strawberry-themed goods made or donated by parents, grandparents, students and friends.      Each year we receive wonderful sewn and crafted items. Each year is slightly different, but we do have some specific items that are perennially popular, such as our t-shirts and homemade strawberry jam (a huge seller). We rely upon your help to replenish the stock. If you would like to have the recipe for the jam, ideas for sewn items, or if you have any other ideas for the booth, please call Mary at 389-4566.      The Community Chest makes a nice profit for the school and has a faithful following in the festival-goers! We will have a box in the office waiting to receive your goodies. Thanks for your help as we prepare for our most successful Strawberry Festival yet!
