What an incredible festival! The weather was perfect; the crowds were huge;
the food was delicious; and the volunteers were amazing. Thank you to everyone
who volunteered. We really appreciate all of you and everything that you did to
make the festival a success. Parents, teachers and staff, alumni, students,
grandparents, Community High School, spouses, Wachovia volunteers, and friends
of the school all came together to pull it off. There are not enough ways to say
thank you to properly thank you all, but please know how much we appreciate
everything you did. You are amazing! We would like to add a very special thank
you to Mary Potter, Carissa South, Michi Hines, and Gene Lurker for going above
and beyond and for doing such a tremendous job organizing the festival. For
those of you who are new to Community School, we will announce the grand total
from the festival on Celebration Night.
We have revised the 2008-09 Community School calendar. Please note the
change in the dates for spring break. You may download copy from the link
at the bottom of this page.
Time for some Espanol fun for everybody. All parents, grandparents, and/or friends are welcome to join us! Please let your child’s teacher know how many guests he/she will have at least 2 days before their trip. We need to give El Rodeo an accurate count so they can set up for us. This field trip will be the culmination of our food studies. Each student will order his/her food in Spanish, dessert and all! The price will be $7.00 in CASH (please, no checks). Send the money to your child’s teacher, since the second part of the experience is that your child will go to the cash register at El Rodeo and pay in Espanol. We thank you so much and are looking forward to this wonderful learning experience. Please join us and be proud of your child’s knowledge of Spanish! Gracias! Elena Note: $7.00 price includes lunch, drink, dessert, tip and tax.
We will leave school at the scheduled time & meet parents
at El Rodeo (Plantation Road location).

Forms and money for Kings Dominion are due this week; I will order tickets by the end of the week. If you need a form, contact Kim M at kimmuch@communityschool.net. Also, we will be singing the national anthem on Tuesday, May 13, at the Salem Avalanche game. Tickets for choir members are free, but we need to have the total number of tickets needed by this Friday. Choir members will need to meet at the front gate area by 6:30 p.m. wearing a choir t-shirt or Community School t-shirt.
Please bring money (cash or check made out to the Salem Avalanche) and number
of attendees to the C.S. office by Friday, May 9, so we can finalize the size of
the party and get the tickets. You can pick up your tickets at the Will Call
window on game day.
The C.S. choir will be singing the national anthem, so get there early! We hope
to have C.S. students in the on-field games between innings, parents participate
in sing for your supper (karaoke), and recognition on the scoreboard.
It’s a good opportunity to wear your Strawberry Festival or C.S. t-shirts

Emergency call for props! We are looking for lanterns, fake tombstones, wicker picnic baskets, and wooden or wicker benches. Be sure to attach your name so we can return the loaned item to the proper family. We start rehearsals at the theatre next week, so these items are needed ASAP. Contact Kim M or Lisa if you have questions.
The Music Department and the Middle School Choir are having a joint fundraiser. We have a beautiful, framed P. Buckley Moss Members Only Print that we are raffling for $1.00 per ticket or 6 tickets for $5.00. The title of the print is “For the Love of Children,” with a value including framing of over $250.00. (Many thanks to Louie Cross and I’ve Been Framed by Louie for the beautiful framing!) Proceeds will be split between the choir’s trip to Kings Dominion on May 30 and a laptop computer and music software for the music department. We will be selling tickets until the drawing at the Arts Festival on May 23. If you would like to purchase tickets, please send in an envelope with your name and phone number, the number of tickets you wish to purchase, and the money. Your tickets will be filled out and the ticket stubs will be returned to you. Thank you for supporting our music program at Community School. If you have any questions, contact Kim M at kimmuch@communityschool.net.
Thank you to all who have earned money for our technology program by placing their orders through the Amazon links on the C.S. website. I want to point out an extra earning opportunity for us. Amazon has announced that the Kindle reader is now in stock and available for shipment. Customers can, for a limited time, receive free two-day shipping on Kindle. C.S. will earn 10% in referral fees on the Amazon Kindle wireless reading device and Kindle Edition books, newspapers, magazines, and blog subscriptions. You can check it out on the Amazon link page, http://www.communityschool.net/giving_amazon.html. From time to time, as Amazon creates these opportunities for us to earn higher referral fees, I will update this page on the C.S. site. Please continue to support our technology program whenever you shop with Amazon by clicking through the links on the C.S. site. If you have any questions, please contact Lelia at leliac@communityschool.net.
1) Congratulations to CHS students Margeau G. and Jacob B. who will have
their photographs exhibited in the 24th Annual High School Art Exhibition
presented by the Arts Council of the Blue Ridge. Margeau’s work is entitled
“Bulbs,” and Jacob’s is entitled “Flags and Bridges.” The exhibition will be
held at the Wetherill Visual Arts Center at Hollins University from May 1
through June 8.
2) Congratulations to the following CHS students who recently won awards for
their performances on the National Latin Examination. It is a testament to the
wonderful CHS Latin instructor Gail Lambert that all of her Latin students won a
commendation. This test is very difficult, and our students excelled. Lucas S.
(Latin II, Magna Cum Laude), Will H. (Latin II, Cum Laude), Sean R. (Latin I,
Magna Cum Laude), Yasmine A. (Latin I, Magna Cum Laude). Margeau, Lucas, Sean
and Yasmine are all C.S. alumni (Seminar classes of 2005, 2006, and 2007).
Community School will be hosting Camp Connect, a summer day camp for middle and high school students with Asperger’s Syndrome, during the month of July. If you, or someone you know, are interested in more information, please call 520-2031 or visit www.campconnectVA.com.
On May 9 and May 16, the costuming Friday group in the middle school will be making quarter-scale costumes from patterns designed by the students. Our Friday group meets from 10:00 a.m. to noon in Katrina’s classroom. If you have a sewing machine, time, and a sense of humor, we could use the help of four great people. Please call Anna Beebe if you are interested.
Each year C.S. parents nominate and elect representatives to the Board of Trustees. Each segment of the school elects one representative. The term of office is one year. During this year the representatives will attend Board meetings and participate in one of the board’s standing committees (finance, development, staff compensation, and long-range planning). In addition they help arrange new parent orientation and first day refreshments for parents. Each parent representative serves as a channel of communication from the parent body to the Board. They should keep their ears to the ground and be available to parents to hear their comments and bring them to the Board. Being a parent representative is a great way to learn more about how the school runs and be an active participant in that process. For more information on the role of the parent representative, contact Debbie Martin (2007-08 Middle School representative) at 977-2061 or Don Powell (2007-08 Early Learner/ Elementary representative) at 521-8649. We are currently looking for nominations for Early Learner/Elementary and Middle School parent representatives. This can be a self-nomination, or you can nominate someone you think would serve well. If this interests you or you would like to nominate someone, please contact Holly Hirst at 563-5036 or hollyh@communityschool.net.
