Fall Open House
Wednesday & Thursday, November 14 & 15
In three weeks we will host our fall Open House for parents of
current and prospective students. The event will begin with
registration at 10:15 a.m. in the drama room, followed by an
information session at 10:30. From 11:00 to noon, some of our
current parents will lead tours through our classrooms. The
tours will conclude in the teacher resource room with
refreshments and a chance to chat with other parents and staff.
The Open House is a great opportunity for prospective parents to
learn about our curriculum and philosophy and to speak with
current parents. For current parents, the Open House offers a
chance to visit classrooms outside of your child’s age group.
Our fall Open House is one of our most important opportunities
to recruit new students. We have a few spaces open in the
elementary classes for mid-year transfers. We are now accepting
applications for students in all levels for fall 2008. Full
enrollment means lower tuition costs for everyone, as well as
greater availability of financial aid for families in need.
Moreover, current families can earn a $250 tuition credit for
referring a new student who enrolls at C.S. To receive the
credit, you must turn a parent referral card in to Victoria
before the student applies. (More information on the tuition
referral credit is provided below.)
Please help us in our recruitment efforts by telling your
friends about our upcoming Open House. Place flyers in your
place of business, church, synagogue, local coffee house,
library, etc. Give invitation postcards to your neighbors,
friends and relatives. Flyers, invitations, and referral cards
are available in the office. If you have any questions about the
Open House or admissions in general, please give Victoria a call
(563-5036). Thank you for supporting our extraordinary school!

C.S. Middle School
Students to Perform Once Upon
a Starfish

|
Community School parents are
cordially invited to see Once Upon a Starfish on October
26 at Northview United Methodist Church (521 Ridgecrest Dr.).
Twelve C.S. middle school students will perform this delightful
musical written by Lisa Turpin-Gabourel, our own middle school
drama teacher. There will be two performances: 10:30 a.m. for
Early Learner through middle elementary classes and 1:00 p.m.
for upper elementary and middle school classes. You are most
welcome to join us for either show.

Bolivian Exchange Students Arrive on October
26
|
For the tenth year, we are delighted to welcome
exchange students from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, to our school. This
year we have seven boys and two girls visiting. They will be
staying with Community School families and attending classes at
C.S. from October 26 through December 14. Students from our
middle school program will go to Santa Cruz during the second
semester.

Retakes & Make-Up Pictures Oct. 30
|
Student picture retakes and make-up pictures are
scheduled for Tues., Oct. 30. Please call the office to

Halloween Carnival
For
Elementary Classes
Date: Wed., Oct. 31
Location:
Tayloe Gym, Hollins
University |
The elementary students will
be attending a Halloween Carnival on the Hollins University
campus on October 31. Please send your child’s costume to
school that day. Students should not wear their costumes to
school as it makes classroom concentration extremely difficult!
We will need parent volunteers to help children put on
their costumes, to walk the children to Hollins, and to attend
the party with the classes. Please see your child’s teacher if
you can help. |
C.S. Students Learn About All Saints Day on November 1
|
On November 1, our students will be comparing
cultural traditions by learning about and celebrating All Saints
Day. They will participate in activities in the Spanish and art
rooms. Community High School Spanish students will assist the
younger students with the activities. Parents are welcome to
join the fun. Schedule: 10:30 - 11:45 a.m. for Early Learner &
elementary classes and 12:45 - 1:30 p.m. for middle school
classes.

Conference Day Information
Elementary Conference Schedule
M.S.
Conference Schedule |
On Tuesday, November 6, C.S.
will hold its first Conference Day of the year. There will be no
school on this day, but children are expected to attend their
conference with their parent or caregiver. Prior to conferences,
students, with the help of their teachers, compile a portfolio
of the work that best demonstrates their progress over the past
nine weeks. C.S. conferences are a time for students to share
their progress with their parents and caregivers. Students
evaluate their own progress, share how they feel about their
work, and set goals for the upcoming nine weeks.
Conference Day is an
important component of your child’s social, emotional, physical,
and cognitive assessment. If you are not listed on the attached
conference schedule, please call Connie in the office between
8:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon as soon as possible to arrange a
conference time. Please contact your child’s teacher if you
cannot attend your child’s scheduled time.
Remember:
1.
No regular classes on Tuesday,
November 6.
2.
Bring your child to his/her
conference.
3.
Please
arrive on time.

Food Donation Drive
Please place your food
donations in the containers beside the school office. |
The Community School Board of Trustees is
conducting a Food Drive to benefit area food banks and shelters.
Non-perishable food items and paper products will be collected
from now until Thanksgiving. Containers will be available next
to the office for easy drop-off. Items most needed are canned
soups, vegetables, fruits, tomato sauces as well as dried pasta
and paper towels and toilet paper. Larger canned goods are
preferred, but all donations will be appreciated. Our goal is to
collect 500 or more items. Please consider supporting this
project!

Destination Imagination Information Meeting
Monday, November 5
3:30 p.m. in Room 105 |
There will be an information meeting on Monday,
November 5, at 3:30 p.m. in Beth’s room (#105). Parents need to
accompany their children to the meeting. What is DI? It is a
program where kids take what they know and what they are good at
doing and learn to apply their knowledge and skills to solve
challenges and work cooperatively as a team. Come to the meeting
and find out more. Elementary and middle school students are
eligible to participate. Parent coaches and volunteers needed! |
Shop Amazon & Support Community School’s Technology Program
C.S. can now
earn 20% in referral fees for Amazon MP3 Downloads! |
The holidays will
be upon us before we know it! Please support our technology
program by doing your online shopping through the Amazon link on
the C.S. homepage. You are not limited to books. Amazon sells
everything! Without adding to your cost, we will receive a
percentage of all orders if you place them through the link on
our homepage.
We are excited to
announce C.S. can now earn 20% in referral fees on
Amazon MP3 Downloads. Amazon.com's existing selection of
over one million CDs offers customers more selection of physical
and digital music than any other retailer. Every song and album
on Amazon MP3 is available exclusively in the MP3 format without
digital rights management (DRM) software. This means that Amazon
MP3 customers are free to enjoy their music downloads using any
hardware device, organize their music using any music management
application, and burn songs to CDs. Most songs are priced from
89 cents to 99 cents, with more than one million of the two
million songs priced at 89 cents. You can find the link to these
and other Amazon.com items near the bottom of the C.S.
homepage

Looking for Ways to Save a Little Money on Your Tuition?
|
Community School families
are eligible for a $250 tuition credit for referring a new
student who enrolls at C.S. To qualify for the credit, you must
submit a completed referral form or e-mail the referral
information to Victoria before
the family has submitted an admissions application. If multiple
current families refer the same student, the $250 credit is
divided evenly between the referring families. The credit will
show up on your account in the semester that the new student
enrolls. Referral credits are not given for siblings of current
students or for talking to prospective parents who are visiting
C.S. if you did not previously refer those parents -- that
includes talking to prospective parents while you are a
substitute teacher, volunteering at C.S., or just hanging out on
campus. Referral forms are available in the office and on our
website. You can reach Victoria at
