Notes from
the Director (Holly)
Do you have your tickets
for Saturday night? Get them
here.
Have you
noticed the energetic sounds of steel drums at dismissal? Have
you seen the faculty and staff dressed in their bright tropical
garb? Have your children mentioned the Caribbean
activities that they have done in their classrooms? What is it
all about?
On
Saturday, November 3, Community
School
is partnering with Quest
Academy and The
Jefferson Center to present a fun-filled family evening of steel
drum music and dancing. Coming together as a community to
celebrate music and to raise funds for our school is a fabulous
way to spend a weekend evening.
To
purchase your tickets, you can call the
Jefferson
Center at 345-2550 or order them through the link above.
Children under 6 are free; children’s tickets are $6; student
tickets (with identification) are $12.00; and adults are $16.00.
Invite your friends and families to join us!
*Students
in P.O.P. and/or the steel drum performance are required to
purchase a ticket for admission.
I look
forward to seeing everyone there!

Halloween Carnival
For
Elementary Classes
Date: Wed., Oct.
31
Location: Tayloe Gym, Hollins
University
|
The elementary students will be attending a
Halloween Carnival on the Hollins
University
campus on October 31. Please send
your child’s costume to school that day. Students should not
wear their costumes to school as it makes classroom
concentration extremely difficult! We will need parent
volunteers to help children put on their costumes, to walk
the children to Hollins, and to attend the party with the
classes. Please see your child’s teacher if you can help.
Katie, Beth & Autumn’s classes 12:00 – 1:00
Gretchen, Kim & Betsy’s classes 1:30 – 2:30 |
C.S. Students Learn About All Saints Day on November 1
|
On November 1,
our students will be comparing cultural traditions by learning
about and celebrating All Saints Day. They will participate in
activities in the Spanish and art rooms. Community High School
Spanish students will assist the younger students with the
activities. Parents are welcome to join the fun. Schedule: 10:30
- 11:45 a.m. for Early Learner & elementary classes and 12:45 -
1:30 p.m. for middle school classes.
|
Destination Imagination Information Meeting
Monday, November 5
3:30 p.m. in Room 105 |
There will be an
information meeting on Monday, November 5, at 3:30 p.m. in
Beth’s room (#105). Parents need to accompany their children to
the meeting. What is DI? It is a program where kids take what
they know and what they are good at doing and learn to apply
their knowledge and skills to solve challenges and work
cooperatively as a team. Come to the meeting and find out more.
Elementary and middle school students are eligible to
participate. Parent coaches and volunteers needed!

Conference Day Information
Tuesday,
November 6 |
On Tuesday, November 6, C.S. will hold its first
Conference Day of the year. There will be no school on this day,
but children are expected to attend their conference with their
parent or caregiver. Prior to conferences, students, with the
help of their teachers, compile a portfolio of the work that
best demonstrates their progress over the past nine weeks. C.S.
conferences are a time for students to share their progress with
their parents and caregivers. Students evaluate their own
progress, share how they feel about their work, and set goals
for the upcoming nine weeks.
Conference Day is an important component of your
child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive assessment.
If you are not listed on the conference schedule (see end of
QN), please call Connie in the office between 8:00 a.m.
and 12:00
noon as soon as possible to arrange a conference time. Please
contact your child’s teacher if you cannot attend your child’s
scheduled time.
Remember:
1.
No regular classes on Tuesday, November 6.
2.
Bring your child to his/her conference.
3.
Please arrive on time.

Circles of Community Learning Disabilities Meeting
Wed., Nov. 14, 5-6:00 p.m.
|
Caregivers of
students with learning disabilities will meet to share
strategies and tactics for helping their children on Wednesday,
November 14. Gretchen Notermann and Lucia will host the event
for adults in Room 103, and childcare will be provided nearby.
If you child has a diagnosed or suspected learning disability,
please join us.

Food Donation Drive
Reminder
Please place your food
donations in the containers beside the school office. |
The Community
School Board of Trustees is conducting a Food Drive to benefit
area food banks and shelters. Non-perishable food items and
paper products will be collected from now until Thanksgiving.
Containers will be available next to the office for easy
drop-off. Items most needed are canned soups, vegetables,
fruits, tomato sauces as well as dried pasta and paper towels
and toilet paper. Larger canned goods are preferred, but all
donations will be appreciated. Our goal is to collect 500 or
more items. Please consider supporting this project!
