Notes
from the School Administrator (Michi)
Although we have just started
school, plans are underway for this year’s Fall Festival.
Fall
Festival is an
outdoor/camping tradition at Community
School. All students participate in day and overnight trips. Fall Festival
trips will take place the week of October 8. Handouts providing
details about schedules, gear and supplies your child will need
were or will be given to parents at Gatherings. See your child’s
teacher if you have any questions. Fall Festival days are
considered school days, and attendance is expected.
Fees for Fall Festival trips
cover the costs of activities, accommodations and camping fees.
(Please see the table below for rates.) All payments should
go directly to the classroom teacher. Fees should be paid by
Monday, October 22. We understand that some families find it
difficult to pay for this activity. We welcome contributions
toward the expenses of students for whom the fee is too costly.
Our priority is for every child to have the opportunity to
experience Fall Festival.

CS Seminar
Student One of the Youngest People Ever to Address the Virginia
Senate |
CS Seminar student Pete T. (age 13) addressed the
Virginia State Senate in Richmond last week as part of an effort
to drum up support for a bill that would mandate higher payouts
for artificial limbs and force private insurers to match the
benefits already offered by Medicare. Pete, one of dozens of
amputees speaking last Thursday about their struggles with
insurance coverage, was one of the youngest people ever to
address the Virginia state legislature. You can read more about
this effort and the proposed bill in the Business Section of the
September 21 issue of The Roanoke Times.

Community
Service Project Organized by CS Seminar Student |
In Jamaica, kids
only kick cans around pretending to play soccer. I am collecting
used but still serviceable soccer garb (cleats, shorts, soccer
balls, shin guards, etc.) that you are willing to donate for
these kids. A box will be provided at Community
School to drop off any items. I will be collecting through mid-January. The
donated items will be sent with a group that goes to
Jamaica
each March and works with the underprivileged and extremely
poor. Thank you. Dakota (CS student)

Spotlight on
Kroger Gift Cards
Use the cards
when you shop and Kroger will donate money to CS at no cost to
you! |
Purchase your $5
Kroger Gift Card in the Community
School office. These cards are linked to
Community
School. You get back the $5 on the card. Add value at Kroger,
either at Customer Service or at the checkout. Use the card
to pay for your groceries. Kroger keeps a running total and, if
enough groceries are purchased this way over the month, we get a
percentage back, in cash, of the total. It's easy
and really pays back! Tip: some parents load the card at
the beginning of the month with their monthly grocery allowance,
then just use the card every time they shop. It works for Kroger
gas, too!

|
Family
Packets
|
Family packets
were disseminated earlier in September via the youngest child in
each family. The packets included a family handbook, family
directory, computer usage agreement, and the most recent class
list. If you did not receive your packet, please contact the
main office at 563-5036.

New Spam Filter in Use at CS
|
Due to the
overwhelming amount of spam on our school e-mail accounts, we
have installed a new spam filter on the CS computer network. As
we adjust to this new filter, please don’t assume that your
e-mails are being ignored! If you don’t receive a reply, please
call us to verify that your e-mail was received. Thank you for
your patience!

Needed for Class
|
Tulie and
Sarah’s Early Learner class would love to have the following
items: Duplo building blocks and wooden Brio or Brio compatible
trains and tracks. If you have these items and your children no
longer play with them, and you are willing to permanently donate
these items to CS, please contact Tulie or Sarah. Thank you!
