Active Reading Tips

Use Post-It Notes to write down important information, character developments, to help follow the plot or to mark places you have questions.

Use Index cards (either whole or with a line cut out) to help you keep your place and not feel overwhelmed by the other words on the page.

Create a chart to check off the chapters as you complete them. You can also include squares to check off the work you complete as well.

Stay Focused; Help understanding; Stay Motivated!

Small Writings—Not New, But Improved
For 2nd and 3rd Year M.S. Students

For the 2007-2008 school year, you will be following a schedule for your weekly Small Writings. They are still due on Thursday, during your class time.

1. Response to Current Event
2. Response to the book you’re reading at home.
3. Response to class.
4. Free Choice.

1. Response to Current Event—

You must use an article from a newspaper, magazine or an online news source. If you include a title for your S.W., it may NOT be the same title as the article. In your S.W., you should discuss who (who is involved?), what (what is happening?), when, where and why or how. Try to connect the current event to your life; be sure to include why it is important to you. *You must include a bibliography with this S.W.

2. Response to the book you’re reading at home—

I fully expect that, in addition to what we are reading in class, that you are also reading a book at home. Once a month, you should write about the book that you are currently reading. In the first paragraph, you should include the title (again, not the same title as your S.W.), the author, the main characters and a summary of the plot. In the second paragraph, you should share your thoughts on the book. What did you enjoy or not enjoy? Is there a context that added to your understanding or enjoyment? Would you recommend the book to a friend? Why or why not? *You must include a bibliography with this S.W.

3. Response to class—

Write about what we are currently studying in class (books, writing, etc.). What are you learning? What do you enjoy or not enjoy about class? What questions do you still have? Have you made any connections to other classes, your own life, etc.?

4. Free Choice—

Self-explanatory! (I hope).
