Community School’s STEM lab contains a 50-gallon fish tank that is now home to 300 trout eggs in the process of hatching! The tank and eggs were delivered by volunteers of the nationwide environmental education program known as Trout in the Classroom (TIC). Our students will join will join K-12 students across the country as they:
- Raise trout from eggs to fry
- Monitor tank water quality
- Engage in stream habitat study
- Determine water quality by studying macro-invertebrates
- Learn to appreciate water resources
- Begin to foster a conservation ethic
- Grow to understand ecosystems
Most programs end the year by releasing their trout in a state-approved stream near the school or within a nearby watershed. Last year students raised and released about 150 healthy trout at Wasena Park in Roanoke. During the year our teachers will tailor the program to fit his or her curricular needs. TIC has interdisciplinary applications in science, social studies, mathematics, language arts, fine arts, and physical education. This makes them a great match for Community School!
